Everyone has dead skin cells, oil, and other stuff that make up a relatively lifeless outermost layer of our epidermis. We scrub, peel, and use other methods of trying to exfoliate away the unwanted layer to expose the healthy, younger skin beneath.
At Dr. Judith Gurley Plastic Surgery & Spa, we offer microdermabrasion treatments to remove that outer layer. Microdermabrasion uses tiny crystals to remove unwanted cells and expose the skin below.
Dr. Gurley recommends microdermabrasion as either a stand-alone procedure or in conjunction with other procedures to facilitate the penetration of products or to maintain the skin’s smooth texture.
Microdermabrasion is effective when used for certain skin conditions:
Microdermabrasion is non-invasive and non-surgical. It involves the use of aluminum oxide crystals to exfoliate the skin surface. The crystals are sprayed onto the skin through a wand that also suctions back the crystals and any dead skin that has been removed. The degree of exfoliation is determined by the amount of suction used, along with the number of passes made over an area.
Initially, three to six microdermabrasion sessions are used to enhance skin hydration, sebum production, and texture. From there, once or twice monthly sessions are recommended. No anesthesia or numbing agents are necessary.
