We educate patients on after-care for a smooth and successful recovery.
Supporting a healthy recovery
What you do in the hours, days, and weeks following your procedure plays an essential role in your comfort and safety and the long-term results of treatment. To get this process started, Dr. Gurley and her team will see you after surgery. She does not delegate this vital touchpoint to another provider or team member. You will learn about the many factors and considerations that can either make or break your healing and recovery experience. The factors include:
- When to resume exercise and other activities
- Compression garments and other coverings that should be worn to protect surgical sites and encourage healing
- Needs for sutures (to protect them and when they may need to come out)
- When make-up can be worn and good options for cosmetics and skin care
- When to resume any medications or supplements (as appropriate, as some modifications may have been made as preparation to minimize bleeding and other risks)
- Ways to manage any discomfort, swelling, and other side effects
- What is “normal” during the healing process
- Red flags or signs that a site is not healing as it should be
Of course, if it concerns you, it concerns our team. You should contact us without delay if there are any concerning changes. We also welcome any questions you may have beyond what may be explained in any instructions provided as part of your recovery plan.
Additionally, Dr. Gurley regularly “gets eyes on” surgical sites. So she can adequately monitor how well you are responding to treatment. That way, she can avoid any potential issues before they become problems requiring additional treatment and care.
Our Chesterfield office in the St. Louis, MO area typically schedules post-operative visits for our patients on the first day of healing, weekly for the next 4-6 weeks, and then monthly for the first year.
