IPL (Intense Pulse Light): Harnessing light to treat and rejuvenate sun-damaged skin
At the office of Judith Gurley Plastic Surgery & Medical Spa, our team in Chesterfield appreciates the damage that can be wrought by exposure to harmful ultraviolet light from the sun’s rays or artificial sources, such as pollutants or tanning beds. We reverse this damage among our valued patients in St. Louis, Missouri, and beyond daily. Skin deterioration and imperfections can manifest as red and brown discoloration, visible broken capillaries, redness, dullness, or an overall dry, aged, and tired-looking complexion.
IPL (Intense Pulse Light) to the rescue!
The good news is we can harness healthy light rays to restore the youthful and healthy softness, radiance, tone, and overall quality of your skin. Also known as “photodynamic therapy,” the “IPL (Intense Pulse Light)” spa service may be recommended by our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Gurley. It is a non-surgical, minimally invasive alternative to other laser therapy options. IPL utilizes a multitude of programmed wavelengths of light beams allowing it to target varying tones of pigment while leaving healthy skin untouched. IPL is the gold standard within the medical spa community because of its:
- Versatility
- Gentleness
- Associated with fewer side effects
- Minimal risk of complications
- Natural Profile
- Minimal downtime
- Fast and predictable healing
The process
If, after an evaluation with Dr. Gurley, you decide to move forward with IPL (Intense Pulse Light) treatment, a topical numbing anesthetic may be applied for utmost comfort as the therapeutic light is applied and delivered to pigmented or otherwise damaged areas of the face and neck. It can also be used on parts of the body, such as the chest, arms, or hands. The side effects following treatment have sometimes been compared to sunburn. There may be some temporary tenderness, flaking, and redness. As always, protecting your skin from the sun is essential – especially since it may be more sensitive to UV light following treatment. Downtime is minimal since it is a tissue-preserving procedure that leaves the skin intact. Dr. Gurley says, “IPL not only is the best physical treatment for abnormal skin pigment, it also builds collagen with regular treatments. Not only can you have fewer spots but you can achieve dewier, more supple skin!”
