Ever since the FDA approved Botox for the cosmetic treatment of wrinkles back in 2002, it has become a household name. Botox is even more famous than many of the famous faces in Hollywood who use it to keep some of the signs of aging at bay.
So, why is it so famous? Because Botox works, pure and simple. Botox minimizes lines and wrinkles; caused by making facial expressions that result in crow’s feet, frown lines, and things like that.
Botox is a neurotoxin. It is actually made from botulinum toxin type A. This is the same bacteria that causes botulism. That sounds scary, but it’s not. Why? Because decades ago, scientists discovered that the botulinum toxin, when used in very small amounts, can actually temporarily paralyze a muscle. It does this by blocking the signals from the nerve to the brain. Without those messages, the brain doesn’t signal muscle contractions. So when you frown or squint the muscles are less active and your skin stays smooth. Today, several companies manufacture their own “botox”, such as Xeomin, Dysport, and Juveau to name a few.
When opting to have Botox injections, however, it is important to choose a doctor thoroughly versed in facial anatomy, such as Dr. Gurley, because Botox injected into the wrong muscle or injecting too much Botox can create problems such as a droopy eyelid or an odd appearance.
Botox is a great treatment to pair with other procedures or services. It helps preserve facial operations such as facelift, eyelid lift, or fat transfer by minimizing muscle movement and keeping the overlying skin healthy. The combination of botox with other services such as dermal filler, lasers or chemical peels enhances the effect of each of these treatments, far and away better than when each of these treatments are performed in isolation.
