Following the surgery, there is no limitation on range of motion of the arms or showering. You may drive and return to work or school within 24 hours. So I’m often asked, when is the right time for breast reduction surgery in an adolescent? First off, the patient must be physically mature. Breast tissue itself needs to be at a point where it’s no longer changing, and this timeframe at the earliest would be approximately two years after her first menses. The second component is to ensure that the girl is emotionally prepared both for the procedure itself as well as the recovery. And the third, and perhaps the most important thing that I look for is that she is excited and engaged in the process. That means that she really wants the procedure.
