“Life changing, exciting and I wish I did it 10 years ago!”*

We often hear comments like these from patients who choose to have Breast Reduction surgery. Too often, many women and men go through life suffering needlessly from chronic back, neck and shoulder pain and other problems caused by large, heavy, misshapen, uneven or sagging breasts. Embarrassment, loss of self-esteem, unwillingness to socialize, and even depression may also occur.

At Dr. Judith Gurley Plastic Surgery, our goal is to help you alleviate these symptoms and discover the confidence and comfort you’ve been missing. Your only regret may be that you didn’t do it sooner. Call us today to learn more.

What is Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction surgery may be recommended in cases where a patient with large, heavy, misshapen or sagging breasts is experiencing chronic back, neck and shoulder pain, shoulder grooving, rashes, breast pain, and fatigue. Psychological issues may include embarrassment, loss of self-esteem, unwillingness to socialize, and even depression.

The goal of the procedure is to lighten, make smaller, lift and re-shape the breasts. The nipple is lifted to a more youthful position and the shape of the areola can be changed.

What to expect with Breast Reduction

Often breast reduction surgery improves back and neck pain, shoulder grooves, and rashes on, beneath or between the breasts. Breast Reduction surgery enables women to wear bras and clothes they could previously not.

The Breast Reduction Procedure

The procedure is performed at a surgery center, usually on an outpatient basis. An overnight stay may or may not be recommended. The incisions produced leave a scar around the areola, and down from the areola to the crease underneath the breast.  There is a limited scar beneath the breast depending on how much excess skin there is.  All stitches are dissolvable and usually there are no drains.

Breast Reduction Recovery Process

Following the surgery, there is no limitation on range of motion of the arms or showering. You may drive and return to work within 24 hours if you are not taking any pain medication.  It is recommended that you refrain from running, jogging or any strenuous exercise for 4-6 weeks. It is also recommended to wear a bra 24 hours a day for 4-6 weeks.

Dr. Gurley is truly an “artiste”. She started with a magic marker, and now six weeks later, there is so much less of me, but wonderfully and proportionally so. Thanks to Dr. Gurley and all her staff ☺*

Common side effects

In some cases, sensation in the nipple could be decreased or lost and the ability of the areola to contract may be reduced. Additional side effects may include loss of tissue and ability to breastfeed, scar irregularity and asymmetry.

Will I have scarring?

It is important to be aware of the scars involved. Dr. Gurley will provide you with numerous photos of patients so that you can see outcomes.

What other alternatives are available?

Patients may choose instead to wear a support bra. Sometimes a breast lift is all that is needed to reduce the symptoms of hanging breasts. A breast lift can provide internal support that allows the bra to work less hard. A breast lift alone will not decrease the cup size of the breast.
