Correction of Gynecomastia
  • Purpose - Male breast development can occur as a result of a hormonal imbalance or use of certain drugs, but most commonly it occurs for no known reason.  When embarrassing breast tissue makes a man feel uncomfortable to be seen without a shirt, go swimming or wear certain articles of clothing, surgical treatment is often indicated.
  • Expected Outcomes - After surgery for gynecomastia, the chest wall is flatter, making his appearance more “normal.”  There is a reduction in bulges seen through clothing. Out of clothing, the contour of the chest is more masculine.
  • How Procedure is Performed - The excess breast and fatty tissue is removed in such a way as to preserve the sensation and health of the nipple.  The incisions are small and placed strategically depending on the severity of the condition.
  • Alternatives - Rarely liposuction alone will be enough to reduce gynecomastia.  Often the tissue behind the nipple is firm and is not easily removed with liposuction alone.  Waiting for resolution of the condition is recommended if drug use is suspected as the cause, or if the condition has not been present for more than two years.  A hormonal analysis by an endocrinologist (hormone specialist) can often rule out some known causes of male breast development.
  • Recovery - The chest is wrapped, and the procedure is usually outpatient.  Drains are used for a couple of days to help evacuate any fluid and to aid in helping the tissues to stay flat.  No sports or aggressive activity is recommended for two weeks.
  • Risks - In addition to the general risks associated with surgery, there may be other risks, including but not limited to, a loss or reduction in sensitivity of the nipple, loss of tissue, healing problems, asymmetry, residual gynecomastia, need for additional surgery, or buildup of fluid requiring drainage.
